Huelva, Spain

During our extended stay in Punta Umbria, the closest big city was Huelva. Famous for historical ties with Christopher Columbus, it has a large, modern riverside park. At the confluence of Odiel and Tinto rivers stands an enormous monument of Columbus with various figures sculpted into it. On special occasions a door at the base of the monument is unlocked to the public, where stored inside are sculptures of Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand. Peering through the door’s protective screen their images could be glimpsed. Learned later that we could have viewed them on Columbus Day when celebrations took place.

Look ‘way up!
