Ruta del Sol is Ecuador’s Pacific coastal highway where we drove through towns, ceiba forests, a national park, an equatorial crossing point, and much diversity alongside the dominant Pacific ocean.
BAHIA
Stayed here longer than at most stopovers due to the influence of resident X-pats while seriously considering this town for potential relocation.
OLON
Pulled off the highway for the dizzying view. The buildings are no longer occupied but must have been amazing when built. The cliff itself is shaped like the bow of a mighty ship.
The extremely small rental car with standard gear-shift was perfect for the long grades, and unbelievably economical on fuel. Size didn’t bother me, but tall people may need to get out and stretch frequently.
