Our northernmost Portugal city visited. Steeped in history with the significantly important wall. The fortress here is a big tourist draw and a reflective reminder of conflict throughout the ages.
Our older style hotel had several quirks (simply a part of traveling) however, our front facing room (unbeknownst to us) was located directly over a bakery that commenced operation at 3 AM! I was abruptly awakened with a variety of disturbing sounds that continued until daylight, preventing me from getting back to sleep. By 7 AM the breakfast servers in the dining room complimented the din with their version of waking the guests. Upon check-out I related my unhappiness to the clerk about losing sleep, and strongly suggested that with only 1/2 a night’s sleep I should receive a refund of 1/2 the amount paid for the room. He apologized and handed me the amount requested. I thanked him and departed. (p.s. Bill slept thru’ the night).

POVOA DE VARZIM
Stayed in newer section of a large beach-side hotel with scenic view dining room, bar service, facility for weddings, swimming pool. Although too cold for ocean swimming in October, there’s an extensive boardwalk, as seen at most beaches thus far in our European adventure—an indication of fitness-conscious society.
